Prominent Ears

O

toplasty actually means ear aesthetics, as it means in its literal meaning. It is the process of reshaping the auricle, or the pinna, to make it more natural and aesthetic. There are many surgical techniques and methods. It can be successfully performed by a few surgeons.

Who Can Have Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?
Otoplasty can be performed on anyone who is not satisfied with the shape of their ears. Pathologies such as ear size and protrusion (absence or weakness of antihelix and cavum concha hypertrophy) that bother patients can be achieved with various otoplasty techniques, which can provide natural and patient-satisfying results. Especially for preschool children, the average age of 5 is the most ideal time. Making fun of protruding ears at school has a very negative effect on child psychology.

What is the Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) Technique, Complications and Follow-up?
The otoplasty surgery technique is performed under general anesthesia. The average surgery time varies between 1-2 hours. The shape desired to be given to the ear is done with an incision made behind the ear using some suture techniques. Depending on the case, cartilage excision is performed if necessary and a natural aesthetic ear is attempted to be obtained.

After the surgery, the incision behind the ear is closed with sutures. Since it is behind the ear, there may be a barely noticeable, undisturbing scar.

If the dressings are sterile during and after the surgery, no signs of infection are observed. If the sutures used for the patient are appropriate and of high quality, no opening, re-protrusion or deformity is observed in the ear. If good peroperative bleeding control and good postoperative dressing and follow-up are performed, no hematoma (blood accumulation) is observed.

Every other day dressing and check-ups after the surgery last for a total of 10 days. After the patient’s sutures are removed on the tenth day, the patient can return to his daily social life, except that he is advised to sleep with an elastic head bandage only at night.
